Jesse King (known worldwide as Dubmatix) is a Canadian composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and 2-time Juno Award winner with nine nominations across his career. Canada's Juno Awards are the national equivalent of the Grammy Awards, and Dubmatix has been recognised by them more than any other reggae artist in the country's history.
His debut release Champion Sound Clash arrived in 2004 and immediately established him as a force in international reggae. What followed was an unbroken run of critically acclaimed albums, six chart-topping releases in a row, and a presence on the Juno nominations list almost every year from 2009 onwards. The 2019 Juno Award for Best Reggae Recording — won for Sly & Robbie Meet Dubmatix, recorded with the legendary Jamaican rhythm section and released on Echo Beach Records — marked a career high point that also generated over 1,200 radio station plays, reviews and soundsystem responses worldwide.
The album was named Best Dub Album of the Year by Germany's RIDDIM Magazine and praised by Rolling Stone (Germany), who described it as shattering the instrumentals with "boisterous eclecticism between roots, dancehall and clubdub." Reggae historian and author David Katz called it "a cavernous dub excursion, mutated to fine effect by Dubmatix." Dermot Hussey of XM Satellite Radio — one of the most influential voices in reggae broadcasting — described it as "a fascinating Dub Summit." UK trip hop legends Morcheeba gave it a single word: "Killer."
In 2014 Dubmatix appeared on Billboard Magazine's Uncharted Top 50, a list of the fastest-growing artists in the world, where he remained for over 20 weeks. In 2016 Billboard crowned his rendition of Is This Love the #1 Bob Marley Remix of all time — a track that has since accumulated over 35 million streams. That same year he completed a remix for Grammy winners Morgan Heritage, delivering the Blaze Up Remix of Light It Up to international acclaim.
His sound — built on heavy bass, majestic horn lines and thick-set percussive grooves — has made him one of the most sought-after producers working in the reggae and dub space. Over four decades he has recorded, produced and collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists across the full breadth of the genre.
